K98 verticle stringing?
im new to the K98s my first one here. After a deep cleaning. seems she likes to string.
Are there any know quirks to check out ? This is a RC dau 1944 mixed bagOparts headspace is good barrel, well is dark and gritty but I have seen worse. Ammo used was PPU match 200gn I shot 4 groups of 5 with simular results. None really better than the others

Probably already checked, but are the action screws tight?

Yes and rechecked after every 5 shots they where still snug.
I would like to add that before the deep cleaning the surplus ammo grouped minute of somewhere. The ppu match about 5" @ 50 yards. but that was only 10 shots total.

Mac,
The dirt could have been holding it all together! Try shooting as fast as you can and see if the rifle doesn't start putting all its shots into the same hole with a hot barrel. I would also check for contact points between the barrel and the channel in the stock, maybe grease them up if you have any. Most of the milsurps I've owned strung vertically to some degree, maybe 'cause of all the hardware hanging off the front end.
Good luck!

Don't take this the wrong way as I do not know your shooting style, experience or technique. And my suggestion very well may not be the cause as you say you grouped normally before shooting this particular group.
I am a rifle coach for a high school rifle team. If one of my team members brought me a target that looked like that I would tell him that it is a breathing issue. The shooter is breathing while they shoot.
So before you do anything drastic to the rifle, just make yourself aware of what you are doing before, during, and after you pull the trigger.

The 1st thing I did was headspace check and run a jag/patch through it and shoot it. Bore was dark but "looked" strong. I shot everything from a lead slead rest with 50lbs on it. 3 5 shot groups. 2 groups of surplus which I couldnt fit into one picture.....horrible. Then the last 5 shot group with PPU match 200gn the aim point was the blue pen X
more later

I understand what your saying but I was useing a lead sled with 50lbs of lead on it. I shot a 80 rnd xtc earlier that day and had my routine and eye sight doing well.

Did you slug the bore? A lot of these R/C K98 saw heavy use it may just be shot out. How does the crown look, are the lands still there?
Does it start winging when it warms up if so look for barrel contact with the stock/hand guard.
As for the low POI of PPU vs reloads vs surplus thats a velocity issue you'll have to zero to whatever the rifle likes after you find it.
I wouldn't expect much better then 4 moa @ 100yds with R/C mausers....that's my 2 cents.....

heres the crown redo i did with hand crowning tool. the before pic was lost in the transfer from camera to PC? rifling looked strong before deep cleaning, it now appears thin at least near the muzzle. If i can get this thing down under 6moa Im a happy camper. if not it will be a parts gun.
