SA marking on a M1911 Commercial frame?
Got this M1911 Commercial frame from 1916. It's nearly everywhere covered with strange black lacquer. On the right side of the frame below the S/N there's a second S/N and addtionally a SA repair marking.
Why would a Commercial frame have a SA marking and what for is the second S/N?
Thanks,
Georg

Could this one be a model that was purchased for use by an individual? Then after a time it was absorbed into the system and would be inspected by the weapon shop? Maybe renumbered at that time for whatever reason?

The pistols that were renumbered were not renumbered using a previously used serial number. Serial number 1544362 was previously used on a Remington Rand 1911A1 shipped in June of 1944.
When the arsenals/rebuild facilities renumbered a pistol, they used an X prefix number. The first batch of numbers were X1000 to X4385. Then the numbers skipped past the last serial number used on 1911A1 pistols to X2693614 to X2695212.

Any other idea what the SA marking has to do on the frame if it's not one of the renumbered pieces? I thought of those that were "converted" to Military M1911, but as far as I know this happened in 1918 so the 1916 frame would be too early.

It's not a "English contract" for Russia? If it's a 63,xxx S/N then it falls right in that batch of 50,000. Or...
I also think the "SA"may be really "8A".

No, no cyrillic letters on the left side of the frame. And had it being checked, it's definately "SA" not "8A".

There is nothing to indicate the additional number (I didn't say serial number) or SA markings have anything to do with the military.
It could be someone's initials and telephone number? No way of knowing. It just doesn't look like anything I've seen marked by Springfield Armory.

Took me some time to get all that lacquer and pittings off, but here it finally is:
Whatever - I'm going to look now for a Commercial slide and barrel to complete it back. Anyone here might got a spare one for sale (I do have an exporter, so also US located parts would be fine)?
