    2 Band Enfield

    Hi all,

I have a rather crude two band Enfield, that may have been a part of a commercial contract for the Portuguese? It has very few markings, the lock appears to be 187x, and the stock has a lot of brass rivets and a few cracks. I couldn’t get a decent photo of the rifling, but it appears closer to Henry than P52. Any thoughts, would be welcome.

Michael: The lock is probably from a Portugese contract Snider, given the date. The rifling does look unusual and you should try for a better photo. Are there proofs, etc, on the usual spot on the barrel? Also, have you measured the bore diameter at the muzzle?

I wouldn't get too involved in trying to recreate a plausible history for this one. Rivets in the woodwork are a sure sign of very irregular use way outside any military organization. It looks to me like a bit of "Ali Bubba" recycling, with parts from anywhere and everywhere.

As to the barrel, I think you will have to dismantle the rifle and make photos of any markings you can find hidden below the woodwork. These can be very informative.
