Actually this stock was given to me over 10 years ago. It was someons crude attempt at a real forgery and the faker swore it looked good. Rick B

Really? I am a rank novice when it comes to these things but I can tell that one from the first glance.
I like the way you put the fake next to the real ones in the pictures. It is a huge help to have them side by side. I am not as fortunate as some to have seen many or have access to the real stamps.

QUOTE]
Have you ever seen someone with a house or car that is a total mess and they tell you how great the stuff is. You have to realize some people cannot see things the same as others.
I used to fight allot with people trying to show them real from fake. They would blast me on the net on how it is impossible from pictures to tell if a stamp is real or fake. I tried to point out a few things but never like I am now. I was even banned 7 years ago over this but have been at it long enough now that those realize I was only trying to do good.
Today is a whole different attitude compared to back then and I took allot of flak from the forgers who were well known good guys. I didn't give up and they hated me for that. Two have since passed away while a few others have either started admitting they were fakes they are selling or they just went underground and do not post under their old names. One of them threaten to pull sponsorship from forums if I wasn't shut up. Rick B

The cross on the "A" is too high.
The tail of the bottom "S" is too long and looks like it was hand drawn.
The box looks a tad small for the letters.
But it sure looks close!
The cannon barrel muzzles are too skinny.
The breach doesn't line up with the cannon barrel.
The cannon ball is too small.
The flame does not look right.
Okay Rick, tear it up!!!

I gotta say, I'd call that one a real... I just don't see much to call it a fake.
So, Rick... is it possible there were very "minor" differences between the stams used at the time? The crossed cannons seem to vary with the inspector, I would have guessed they would all be the same.

There's a little gap between the cannon ball and the wheel, the slope of the middle of the "S"es are too flat, the top "S" isn't aligned right when you look at it in relation to the left side of the "H".
If I hadn't had a good comparison pic to go with it, it would have looked pretty good to me though.

I have found differnt stamps and the differences are so minor its not funny. The key is you will not see allot difference and you will not see two different stamps at the same time. So the inspectors stamp changed lets say but the cannons are still the same old cannons.
Another thing I have done was found some of these documented FAKE stampings on the wrong stocks. What I mean is I have studied machine changes in the wood for starters. On some it is easy like long channels, tapered clip latches or the markings under the butt plate. There are many other ways and over the years it has become easier for me to tell a fake this way.
So when it walks, talks and smells like a Duck it is a Duck.

Here are a couple more hints.
The H is to big [wide].
The end of the G up top doesn't go far enough.
The S is horrible and way out of proportion especially the center line.
Bottom right leg of the A is centered to the S below and should not be.
