Q1 Answered in No32 book. Q2: Purely a matter for you. De rested is de rusted is de-rusted in my opinion. Q3 If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (But you WILL break it if you strip it). Q4 Generally, changing a scope in a bracket is FAR easier than changing a bracket on a rifle. But there will be many more questions to ask before you do. And this has been asked and answered a zillion times on this forum. Q5. After derusting, phosphate and paint. Q6 You CAN leave a chipped lens in place if it's in the outer third of the optical field. But with special precautions. Q7 L1A1 turrets readily available - if you have VERY deep pockets. Q8 If I might be so bold and a tad undiplomatic as to say, that's a silly Q! Of course it should keep its zero. It'd defeat the object if it didn't! Q9, read answer to Q4
If, as you say, you're a beginner, then I would start by practicing on a crap Mk1, read and digest the book and everything possible on this site

Thanks Peter. I will get the book. Q4 "Should I keep bracket and scope together" was from a Historic perspective in that it looks like the bracket and scope have been together a long time!.
With respect to the cross hairs and graticule, if they look a bit "feathered" at the edges I thought it might be better to get them replaced now while I can, and while the scope is apart, so that they might last for another 50-100 years. What are they made of and do they decay?.(The book?).
Could you point me in the direction of potential suppliers of the L1A1 turrets so that I can get a price?. Again, I am not sure if I should leave the scope as it is.
Confused?. Not much!.
Thanks again

You really need to get the little book about these telescopes as most of the Q's you ask are contained within it - such as what are the grat and X wire made from. Steel and platinum. People used to tell me that the X wire was made of spider or silkworm thread but that is an urban myth. They don't 'feather' That is caused by being out of focus.
Book available from Brian at BDL in SC, USA and elsewhere

Hi all
This is my 1st post on this forum and I'm new to the Enfield story, forgive me if I'm treading old ground. However having purchased a scope less 1945 No4T 6 months ago, I am currently on the hunt for a scope and mount. The rifle has its rear pad fitted but no forward one, as it came with one o those smithless mounts and a standard scope, I can only assume it was removed then. I recently spotted a Mk1 scope with a repro mount, having no experience with this set up, I'm a bit weary spending around £1500 to find I can't effectively zero it. I believe a 1945 rifle would normally have a mk3 scope fitted, is this ideal or not that important which mk of scope you fit. I find this rifle fascinating and in time, hopefully have it mated to a scope and firing on the range.

DS Solutions in the UK also have the telescope booklets available. They are the only other company in the world with a quantity available for resale.

You really need to get a front pad before you do anything else. When you've got that, get a decent repop mount and a genuine telescope. One or two people in the world have said good things about the repop telescopes but I am not among those brethren........! Get yourself a genuine scope of any mark. Even if it's not quite right for your year of rifle, you can safely trade upwards in a few years with a smug smile on your face, knowing that the value of your existing telescope has spiralled upwards

I believe the screws are BA, Spitfires have plenty of those fitted, unless they are odd ball ones I should be able to get some from work. I shall have a toot at those mounts. Thanks

Gather work could be at the Battle of Britain flight hanger! Seeing as the Lanc there is called the "City of Lincoln" along with the "Last of the Many Hurri" and with a few Spitfires
From memory the Spitfire had a 37 litre V12 (imagine that in an MGB Peter) my father said there was a shaft in that engine that could withstand an enormous amount of longitudal stress but did not say which it was as he was an RAAF LAC engine fitter on them during WWII
