    My "Mechanical Doorbell"

Here is my "mechanical doorbell". I found these bells in an antique shop some years ago and it was just the bells and springs being sold. They had been removed from an old house as "no longer required" during modernisation, according to the dealer. There was a bit of "fiddling about" required with the connecting linkage so that both bells would both ring together.

Originally they would have rung individually and from the sizes with different tones, in order to call maid or butler etc.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.

We have a large bell on the front porch right by the door where a doorbell should be. It's been there for three years and not one person has ever used it.

Door + Bell = Doorbell, to be rung when requiring attention. Some people appear to have difficulty with the concept.

I grew up in a house built in the 50s. Even though backyards were mostly private, they were still built with a two-chime bell. One chime for the front door and one for the rear door. While the power meter guy would, of course, go into backyards unannounced to read the meter, I still don't know why that would have been a normal thing for people to go into back yards for it to need a separate bell button.
