    A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered.     Daan-- They are probably trying get some of the water off the road using basic hand tools. I don't believe they are under enemy or observation as the area is pretty open and flat. The best way to do the job is to construct drainage ditches on either side of the road with retention ponds to keep the water away from the road. They also can fill in the low spots with medium size gravel or stone and lay corduroy road or Marston matts. With modern Engineering equipment it would be an easy job. With WWII equipment it would take a bit longer.

    It could be just busy work - in my experience often used as a tool to stay out of trouble.
    Shoveling mud might just be keeping those guys from picking a fight with the company next door, gambling, scavenging, etc. Or, perhaps it's voluntary. If I had a choice of looking busy shoveling mud, or stirring diesel into vats of human waste and burning it...I'd be quite eager to shovel mud - or any other task for that matter. Been there.
