I picked up this rifle last year and recently got around to giving it a more thorough look over. I noticed that the rear sight has two serial numbers on it and was wondering if this was done in the factory or is a sign of a repair?
The rifle appears to be all matching aside from that with serials matching on the receiver, barrel (dated 1917), nose cap, and fore-end. Rifle has no import markings and even has its oiler.
If a rifle came into a repair facility with a gimped rear sight and they replaced it with a used sight they would mark it like that. A field facility that had reclaimed parts...
Rear sights were very expensive and were reused whenever possible, mine has had several rilfes underneath it :
G509
F9462
8562N
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
Thanks for the info!! I didn't realize that they re-used sights that often. It looks like mine just underwent repair at a field facility at some point (maybe even saw some combat), but has otherwise stayed pretty original.
