.308 7.7x58 test results

Rifle used was a T-99 Nag S-4 . Berger . 308 190 VLD bullet . First load I-4350 52.2 c CCI-250 , OCL -3.225 Velocity 2625 FPS 5-shot 100 yard 2.8 . Good round holes , right to battle sight . Primer was flat , but not too bad , case looked ok , extraction easy . THE BEST LOAD . Second load H-380 53.6 c OCL 3.295 , 2715 fps . Group was 3.9 [ BUT it got real overcast so hard to see target and sight ] Big muzzle blast , same as above . Berger 210 VLD I-4831 53.4 c OCL 3.310 2560 fps . Group 3.6 [ bad light ] . Same as above . I did hit 10 inch gongs at 200 yards with all loads . I did not set a target at 300 yards as the grass was tall and the rattlesnakes are out . I will get the tractor out next time and mow. I cut shooting time short as the weather was getting nasty and real dark . We just had a tornado hit a near by town 2 days ago .

No , at my Shooting range close to the house . I am headed to the ranch Fri for the weekend . I have a big herd of hogs running around . The does are due to drop fawns soon and I need to keep the hogs away . I just put a scope on a Gew-88 that I bought that had been sportered . I am shooting a 225 grain bullet sub sonic . I will need the scope as all the hogs have gone night hunt only in the heat . The .308 in 7.7 test is for the post a few down .

For those who got into this late , the purpose was to see what bullets could be used for long range 7.7mm Type 99 shooting . Since there are really no readily available .311 bullets that would be good for long range , but there are a lot in .308 , I wanted to see if a real long .308 bullet would ride the lands and stay straight . Also to see if I could get enough velocity out of the 58mm case . The Berger VLD bullets I used have a great BC and I got enough velocity to make them work . The whole question came up in the .303 / 7.7mm post and I thought it was an interesting idea . I also tested my 8x57mm sub-sonic load with a 225 soft round nose bullet . They shot much better than expected with 5-shot groups at 100 yards in the sub 2 inch range . Now to find out if they will work on a wild hog .

Try the Hornady 150 gn SPFB .312" Bob.
I used them for ages in my No.1 MKIII's and my 2 shooter No.4's won comps with them they fly well to 400m and will still knock a hog down if you poke him in the ear not sure on a shoulder shot on a large boar with packed crusty mud and calloused shoulders.
I shot pet food roo's with them for friends and they just knock the stuffings out of them with chest shots I'll check my load data think I was using BR-2's, R.P cases, 42gns AR 2208 and medium crimp with 2/3rds of the cannular showing.

I lost all of my data for all my rifles from 2017 till 2023 by a corrupted xl sheet 6 years of testing etc I now have 2 hard drives in my computer and transfer the data to both of them now.

I have tested over 100 different loads in about 200 different T-99 rifles . Yes I have used the H-150 in about 25 different loading . Overall it is the best bullet for the T-99 for accuracy . The point of the high BC .308 bullets at high velocity was the first poster asked about 700 to 1000 yards loads for the T-99 , that is what I was testing for . The H-150 is not a 700 to 1000 yard bullet . I was not looking for a personal T-99 load for hogs . I have about 70 rifles I use for hog hunting . Many are in calibers I invented for hog hunting in rifles I built to shoot those calibers . The scoped Gew-88 was just to see how a sun-sonic 225 8mm would work on hogs . I did not get to find out as the first night I was hunkered down in the cabin as a massive thunderstorm blew through from 10 pm to 4 am . The next night the hogs did not come out till after my bed time !
