Vintage Electrical Appliance # 3 - "The Hoover"

    Junior Model 375

This upright vacuum cleaner was purchased new by my family in the late 1940's. The serial number F420565 indicates 1948 production. The plate on the front reads "By Appointment To The Late King George V." I'm not sure why it isn't George Vl. Apparently this model was first made in the late 1930's.

Also shown in the pics is the original accessory kit which, evidently, has been little used.

By the 1970's this cleaner had been relegated as a "spare" as we had a "more modern" 1950's Electrolux vacuum cleaner which, fortunately, I still have.

    Reminds me of a joke:

Q: What's the difference between a Hoover vacuum cleaner and a Harley Davidson motorcycle?

A: The location of the dirtbag.

This is one of the benefits of living in the country with outbuildings: you never have to throw anything away.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

Much changes, much remains the same.

It was more a case of getting maximum use out of appliances and, therefore, during the 1970's most of our domestic appliances dated to the 1950's.

I had to clean out a storage locker once. I found to early '70s Kirby vacs with a complete set of atatchments, floor waxer, buffers, appolstery shampooer. They were tanks and still worked.
